Approximately 90 educators, communicators, stakeholders and scientists convened at the Effective Practices for Ocean Acidification (OA) Communication and Education Workshop that was held immediately following the Third International Ocean in a High CO2 World Symposium in Monterey, California in 2012. Ninety participants from aquariums, universities, state and federal agencies, K-12 schools and NGOs focused on communication and education by developing ocean acidification case studies, improving messaging on ocean acidification, and cultivating audiences for dissemination of OA science. A workshop summary highlighting the target audiences, key challenges in communicating this topic, and key messages and outcomes identified during the workshop was drafted.
The second Effective Practices for Communicating Ocean Acidification Workshop was held during the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, HI on February 26th, 2014 to continue to build the community that translates ocean acidification science for the public and stakeholders. 55 scientists and communicators representing federal and state agencies and non-governmental organizations. Stories to effectively explain and how ocean chemistry is changing, marine life is affected, and people are taking action were shared.
Currently, participants are working in groups focused on nine different aspects of communication to unify and strengthen the OA communication effort nationally. Aspects include: refining OA messages; building a network for those communicating OA science to share resources, successes and lesson learned; collating current OA research and literature to identify case studies to be used in communication products; identifying what to ask of or how to inspire action in an audience; understanding which messages and communication tools are effective for various audiences; and exploring the possibility and feasibility of OA citizen science.
