Pacific Islands Graduate Fellowship: Ocean acidification research and resilience

The NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) is supporting a competitive graduate fellowship that will support students conducting research, in pursuit of a Masters degree, related to ocean acidification (OA) in the Pacific Islands region to help fill a critical gap in capacity for OA research and monitoring in the region. OAP is seeking to fund students who would contribute to the body of knowledge on regional vulnerabilities to OA and potential solutions to build greater resilience against the impacts of OA. Successful applicants will conduct research that addresses physical/chemical oceanographic, biological, and/or socioeconomic questions and concepts. This funding call is part of a broader initiative, which involves multiple international scientific networks and capacity building organizations.

The goals of this fellowship are to (A) support early-career scientists who will provide the Pacific Islands region with ocean acidification research expertise, and (B) provide Pacific Island countries and communities with additional knowledge, information, and resources, which can be used to build greater resilience against acidification and its impacts. Eligibility Information for a list of the prioritized Pacific Island countries.​ Subject to the availability of funding, OAP anticipates up to $300,000 USD total will be available to support approximately 3-6 graduate fellows, with each fellow funded at the approximate level of $20,000 - $32,000 USD per year for 2 years. Each award is intended to fund the fellow’s tuition, stipend, research budget, and/or other costs associated with completing a 2-year Masters degree program.

NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal and Ocean Science Competitive Research Program, Climate Program Office, and Ocean Acidification Program, in partnership with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the Integrated Ocean Observing System Office, are pleased to announce a Fiscal Year 2022 Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) to understand multi-stressor impacts on marine ecosystems under climate change.

The NOAA Ocean Acidification Program has a vacancy for a Physical Scientist ZP 1301-3/4 (Direct Hire) with a negotiable location.

 As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Develop and coordinate the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) ocean acidification science outreach and education. Lead a team charged with coordinating across NOAA and the broader science communication community in the development and dissemination of ocean acidification messages and materials derived from program-sponsored research. Lead team development of new approaches for dissemination of research findings.
  • Monitor and direct the organization’s ocean acidification education activities. Oversee the development of educational materials. Manage major ocean acidification website enhancements. Coordinate execution of ocean acidification-related public webinars. Oversee program communication and educational investments and track program milestones and performance.
  • Coordinate presentation of program-sponsored research findings to lay, managerial and expert audiences within and beyond NOAA using various software packages and social media platforms. Produce original written materials on ocean acidification summarizing program-sponsored research findings for agency, national, and international assessments.

The duties above are described at the full performance level of ZP-4; the ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance.

Seeking a NOAA Ocean Acidification Program Specialist

In support of NOAA’s requirements under the Federal Ocean Acidification Research & Monitoring Act (FOARAM Act) and the Coordinated Ocean Observations and Research Act of 2020 Act (ICOOS Act) the NOAA OAR Ocean Acidification Program is seeking a Program Specialist III for the administration of its internal research projects portfolio and provide some limited additional support to the extramural competitive grants administration team. The incumbent will provide experienced professional level support to OAP program management and will represent the program to other NOAA offices and the extramural research community.

Postdoctoral Associate: Bioinformatics Approaches to Evaluating Responses and Adaptive Capacity to High pCO2 in Alaska Crabs and Fish

NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) is seeking a postdoctoral associate with bioinformatics expertise to examine transcriptomic responses to ocean acidification (OA) and temperature on commercially and economically important crab and fish species. This project will build upon the understanding gained through laboratory experimentation by applying next-generation sequencing techniques to identify the specific alterations in the molecular, metabolic, and physiological pathways of individuals exposed to OA. Whole-genome sequencing of the individuals that demonstrate low sensitivity to OA and will be compared to the general population. By linking the transcriptomic response to the physiological effects successful candidate will work to understand the pathways that impart tolerance and how adaptation will alter the species’ response to future ocean conditions.
