Marine Scientist Position with focus on Ocean Acidification

The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Marine Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. Applications are due April 24, 2018.

This position is located at our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA but conducts work statewide. This position is responsible for conducting marine water quality monitoring, with a focus on ocean acidification. Responsibilities include implementing the addition of ocean acidification-relevant parameters to Ecology's marine waters monitoring program in Puget Sound. This position is also responsible for oceanographic sampling gear preparation and use, instrument calibration (CTD and other electronic sensors), laboratory sample analyses, data analysis, and report writing. The data collected is used to determine the status and trends of marine water quality in context to ocean acidification in Washington state.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Chemical Oceanography

University of Delaware

The University of Delaware (UD) College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in chemical oceanography and metrology. The successful candidate will work on a NOAA funded project to aid in the development of a reference material for ocean pH by establishing traceability of pH indicator dyes to the International System of Units (SI). The scholar will make use of state-of-the-art analytical and experimental facilities at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Candidates must have a PhD in either chemical oceanography, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field. Demonstrated skills with spectrophotometry, potentiometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and/or physical chemistry are preferred. The position will be located at the NIST facility in Gaithersburg, MD, but the appointment will be made through the University of Delaware. The postdoc will also attend field test cruises with the UD group. The appointment will be for one year, with continuation pending funding and progress.

Mid-Atlantic Ocean Acidification Graduate Fellowship Opportunity

Ocean Acidification Program and Sea Grant

The Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Programs in partnership with the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program, are pleased to announce the availability of Ocean Acidification Graduate Research Fellowships for a two-year period covering the 2018 and 2019 academic years. The fellowship is open to full-time graduate students at any academic institution in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia who are engaged in coastal and marine research relevant to regional ocean, coastal, and estuarine acidification. The focus should be on improving understanding of the potential ecological consequences of increasing carbon dioxide concentration in regional coastal waters. Projects may encompass natural and/or social science research topics.

Proposals are being accepted through 5:00 pm ET on Friday, April 13, 2018 via eSeaGrant.

Consultant for Ocean Acidification related Project Implementation

The International Oceanographic Commission is seeking a Consultant for Ocean Acidification related Project Implementation. Applications are due February 28, 2018.

Under the overall authority of the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and under the particular supervision of the Head of the Ocean Science Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: 

i. Ensure effective communication among members of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) Executive Council, including the organization of workshops, meetings, telephone conferences and the facilitation of email exchange; 

ii. Coordinate and deliver IOC’s and GOA-ON’s contribution to relevant ocean acidification UN processes, in particular compilation of relevant information for the reports on progress made to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 14.3, support the IOC secretariat and GOA-ON in developing the SDG indicator 14.3.1 (IOC is the custodian agency for indicator 14.3.1); 

iii. Develop ocean acidification information products and contents of training modules with respect to the SDG target 14.3, in strong collaboration with the IAEA Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre and GOA-ON at large; 

iv. Support GOA-ON and IOC with respect to the Community of Ocean Action on Ocean Acidification, the organization and implementation of capacity building activities, the development of technical protocols, reporting requirements, best practices, and their publication via the IOC website, in consultation with the IOC web officer, as well as to regional ocean acidification networks; 

v. Assist the Head of the Ocean Sciences Section with other IOC activities related to Ocean Acidification, as required; 

vi. Produce the deliverables related to the tasks (i) to (v) above (including documentation for meetings, minutes of teleconferences, written technical notes and reports, contents of training modules, and information products) in a timely and effective fashion.

Student Internship: Analysis of Ocean Acidification and Co-stressor Effects on Fish Early Life Processes

NOAA Fisheries Service Northeast Fisheries Science Center

This project evaluates the potential effects of ocean acidification and other environmental co-stressors on fish populations. The effects on fish of an increased level of ocean acidification –another consequence of C02 emissions – are largely unknown and represent a new and exciting research front. We are using a combination of field, laboratory, and experimental data to address this topic with respect to resource fish species of the northeastern USA. The student will be directly involved in laboratory experiments that address components of this larger research effort. Among other activities in 2018, we will be conducting experiments on the direct and interactive effects of C02 (acidity), dissolved oxygen (DO), and thermal regimes on embryos and larvae of fish, and assessing the adaptive potential of the fish species to these stressors.
