2019 Request for Proposals

Washington Sea Grant

Washington Sea Grant (WSG) requests proposals for one- to-two-year projects from investigators at academic, research and education institutions throughout the state of Washington. Funded projects will contribute to WSG and state priority information needs by advancing knowledge in one of four focus areas: healthy coastal ecosystems; sustainable fisheries and aquaculture; resilient communities and economies; and ocean literacy and workforce development.
 
About $2 million will be awarded during the two-year funding cycle through a competitive review process.
 
Proposals must follow the guidelines detailed in the 2019 Request for Proposals and be submitted through eSeaGrant, WSG’s online proposal submission system. Note: eSeaGrant will open for investigators to start a preliminary proposal on January 28, 2019.

Federal Funding Opportuntity: Domestic Coral Reef Conservation Grant Competition

NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program

This competitive program provides funding via grants or cooperative agreements to institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, and local and Indian tribal government agencies to support coral reef conservation projects in the United States, as authorized under the Coral Reef Conservation Act of 2000 (16 U.S.C. §§ 6401-6409).

These awards are intended to support coral reef conservation projects in shallow water coral reef ecosystems, including reefs at mesophotic depths, in American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Florida, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and coral-dominated banks in U.S. portions of the Gulf of Mexico. Applicants may propose projects in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and the U.S. Pacific Remote Islands, but the Coral Reef Conservation Program does not consider these locations as priorities under this announcement.

Priorities fall within five major categories: 1) Improve Fisheries Sustainability; 2) Reduce Land-Based Sources of Pollution; 3) Increase Resilience to Climate Change; 4) Restore Viable Coral Populations; and 5) Local and Emerging Management Needs. These categories are described in more detail in the full Federal Funding Opportunity announcement. Applications should address CRCP’s national priorities or the jurisdictional priorities as described in the five categories. 

Applicants should submit complete applications via www.grants.gov by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on January 29, 2019.

Federal Funding Opportunity: Regional Ocean Acidification Observing Optimization Study

NOAA OCEAN ACIDIFICATION PROGRAM

The NOAA/OAR/Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) is soliciting proposals for studies investigating ocean acidification monitoring strategies that would offer an observing system design that best characterizes and tracks ocean acidification within U.S. Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) optimized towards characterizing the conditions most relevant to ecologically and economically important marine species.

Ocean Acidification Outreach Internship

NOAA and USCB Marine Science Institute

The Ocean Acidification Outreach Intern will work with scientists and communicators to create regionally specific “Ocean Acidification Outreach In A Box” toolkits tailored for diverse stakeholders who want to learn about the latest OA research. These toolkits will include outreach materials most appropriate for various US regional (Alaska, Pacific Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast and Pacific Islands) audiences and venues and will include actions that audiences can take to adapt to and mitigate this environmental change. By equipping OA scientists and communicators around the nation with effective, consistent and solution-focused messages that make ocean acidification understandable, stakeholders will better understand OA science and be empowered with stewardship actions.

M.S. Level Position focused on “Identifying Factors that May Exacerbate Coastal Acidification in Pacific Northwest Estuaries”

The position is through Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and is with the U.S. Environmental Protection, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory located in Newport, Oregon on the campus of the Hatfield Marine Science Center. 

This individual selected for this position will work on a research project focused on identifying the causes of coastal acidification in Pacific Northwest estuaries and the coastal ocean.  Specifically, we are tracking the watershed and oceanic inputs of nitrogen and carbon to Tillamook Estuary through field sampling of nutrients, stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon (of nitrate, ammonia, dissolved inorganic and organic carbon, and particulate organic carbon) with the goal of identifying local factors which are influencing carbonate chemistry and oxygen dynamics within the estuary.
