The fourth East Coast Ocean Acidification (ECOA-4) cruise completed the first leg sampling the most northern line ever aboard the NOAA Ship NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow. Researchers sampled ocean biogeochemistry at 135 stations from Newport, RI through north of Nova Scotia via the Laurentian Channel. These northern lines provide a more comprehensive look into ocean acidification and other ocean conditions for the region that impact critical fisheries that cross national boundaries including American lobster, sea scallops, herring and groundfish.
Also, ECOA-4 set sail earlier this week for the second and final leg of the mission. Now en route south, the team will sample sample ~80 stations along the way before they return to port in Miami. ECOA-4 measures coast-wide ocean biogeochemical and physical conditions and how changing conditions are affecting marine life and ecosystems. These coast-wide missions ensure that data are collected at the same time in the same locations to provide the highest quality information used to benchmark regional monitoring, modeling, and research. The data are especially critical for models and forecasting ocean acidification and biogeochemical conditions for the East Coast.
