The Haskin Shellifsh Research Lab at Rutgers University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join a dynamic research team on a project that will involve both field-based and laboratory-based experiments.The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating experiments which will include farm-scale grow-out experiments in the ocean, lab-scale multi-stressor (temperature and ocean acidification) experiments in the hatchery, meetings with industry and management collaborators, and writing reports and manuscripts about results. Opportunities for grant writing, undergraduate student mentoring, and presentations at science conferences will be encouraged. Funding is in place for 18 monthsand will include travel to meet with project collaborators and advisors from management and fishing communities.

Postdoctoral Associate: Bioinformatics Approaches to Evaluating Responses and Adaptive Capacity to High pCO2 in Alaska Crabs and Fish
The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) is seeking a postdoctoral associate with bioinformatics expertise to examine transcriptomic responses to ocean acidification (OA) and temperature on commercially and economically important crab and fish species. This project will build upon the understanding gained through laboratory experimentation by applying next-generation sequencing techniques to identify the specific alterations in the molecular, metabolic, and physiological pathways of individuals exposed to OA. Whole-genome sequencing of the individuals that demonstrate low sensitivity to OA and will be compared to the general population. By linking the transcriptomic response to the physiological effects successful candidate will work to understand the pathways that impart tolerance and how adaptation will alter the species’ response to future ocean conditions.

The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship provides funds for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA’s mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Students attending Minority Serving Institutions as defined by the US Department of Education (Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Alaskan-Native Serving Institutions, and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions) are eligible to apply for the program. Students receive awards valued at up to $45,000 in total support (including travel and conference participation) during their junior and senior years. Students complete an 11 week paid summer internship and training at NOAA in Silver Spring, MD, between May and July of the first summer. During the second summer, students complete a 10 week paid internships at NOAA facilities across the country.
Who should apply: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, enrolled as a full-time 2nd year student in a four-year academic program; or transferring from a two-year to a four-year institution; or a 3rd year student in a five-year program and studying a discipline related to NOAA’s programs and mission at an accredited minority serving institution (college or university within the United States or U.S. territories).
